Apolis Activism Spring/Summer 2009

apolisHere is an overview of the Apolis Activism spring/summer 09 lookbook. Apolis Activism was a brand started in 2004 by three brothers, Raan, Shea, and Stenn Parton. the name Apolis translates to  “a citizen of no country,” and they not only are about making and designing great clothes but working on sustainability and humanitarian projects. They work with organizations that help and support developing contries and communities throughout the world, such as CITTA and Invisible Children. The s/s 09 preview is full of great complete looks, consisting of nice oxford and champray shirts, nicely cut khakis and some great looking shorts. Apolis Activism is a good look not only on you, but as well with their business approach to not just trying to make profits but give back as well… The spring/summer line will be available at Fourhorsemen. new looks at Hickey

hs_09808and while the younger, more exuberant sibling of ultra-classic US menswear line Hickey-Freeman hasn’t quite rolled out their entire spring/summer 09 line on the web just yet, Hickey has given us a hint of what’s about to hit the shelves. even though the line’s logo is a potleaf, there’s definitely nothing hippy about these designs – clean cuts, emblematic American styling, and a great pallet make Hickey an easy choice for almost any guy, and the price is quite reasonable for the quality. see more (including the phenomenal combat boots) after the jump.

Vans Syndicate + Gabe Morford

picture-13Vans Syndicate just dropped their collaboration with photographer Gabe Morford, and result is the kind of understated style and functionality you would expect from both the legendary brand and Mash SF alum. I really like the Era shoe with the leather toe cover, and the Kryptonite belt holster – two things meant specifically for fixed riding that have mad style points as well.

the recession hits home – pizza and beer

pbrandpizzaits well documented that the 84/85 boys basically subsist off the nectar of the gods (beer) and the bread of life (pizza). if you came by our apartments and opened the fridges, you would probably give us a look of pity and fear.. but thanks to some great ‘fine dining’ options in town, we manage to get by. I thought it would always continue as such, living the high life on a dime – until I read this article on msnbc! apparently pizza and beer, long considered ‘recession proof’ by economists, are now subject to the same market fluctuations and price hikes affecting other foods and beverages. the price change hasn’t hit my local haunts quite yet, but the fear is in me.. I guess I’ll have to go calm my nerves with a frosty one and fill my gut with some hot doughy cheesy delight.

Wants and Needs: Leica M8 Safari Edition

leica-safarileica-safari1The Leica M8 has been at the top of my ‘wants’ list for some time now, as its truly a masterpiece of form and function. They have recently released a limited safari edition of the M8.2 digital model. The camera is done in a beautiful matte olive green color with brushed silver accents and a saddle leather strap, as well as a matching canvas and leather camera bag. The camera will be limited to 500 pieces and will have the hefty price tag of $10,000… so I will certainly not be owning this or any other Leica M series any time soon, and for now it will just be a dream.

video throwback – Danzig ‘Mother’

gotta go with the video over the MP3 on this one.. Danzig is really just the most amazing guy/band, so serious, so burly. I played this at the bar last night, and people really got in to it.. I don’t know if I can chalk that up to good taste or guitar hero, but either way I was stoked.

Outlier: Tailored Perforance

outlier-og-pantOutlier is a brand that was born out necessity, that is, the need for a functional pant for riding your bike that well doesnt look like a ‘funtional’ pant. Enter the Outlier OG (Original Garment) pant, made from “Schoeller 3xDry and Nanosphere fabrics. Water resistant, breathable, quick drying, grease, stain and abrasion resistant, the list goes on. This is simply the best performing fabric you can get your hands on”. Not to mention they are made in a tailored slim cut, which for trousers is a rarity. They also have a great looking riding cap and hoodie in their collection. I fully support this company and their take on form and functional design, I know how much it sucks to ride your bike to work in skinny raw denim, it’s like having abrasive sandpaper rubbing on your your legs every pedal…More pics after the jump. Chausser @ Blackbird

chausser-boat-shoeBlackbird Seattle recently introduced a lovely new shoe and bag line called Chausser. Based out of Japan, the brand focuses on high quality leather shoes and bags. The leathers are sourced from all over the world and the construction is all done in Japan, which is a formula you cant really go wrong with – high quality Japanese construction with the world’s finest leathers. I love the boat shoe style dress shoes, as well as the Cordova Chukka Boots. Another notable is the great looking YOH#81 sneakers that have a nice clean look to them, reminiscent of a combination of a Jack Purcell and a Chuck Taylor. Check Blackbird for the full run down and more pics of my favourites after the jump… Continue reading
